At Scott Chytil Photography I don't "take pictures", I create imagery. To do that requires a number of different skills beyond the technical and creative aspects of photography.
Listening to the client is of greatest importance, as well as asking the right questions. What is unique about the subject? What aspects do you want to highlight or downplay? What feeling do you want to evoke? Do you have a budget for the project? All of these, and more, are extremely important to know if I am going to create an image that fulfills all your requirements.
If exterior photography is on the list a knowledge of astronomy is very helpful. Using a compass and a PDA I can pinpoint, to within a few minutes, exactly where the sun will be on any given day. After scouting a location I will know the best time to photograph the building, even if there are other buildings or large trees potentially blocking sunlight. Most jobs won't require pinpoint accuracy of the sun, but some will, especially in winter when the sun isn't around as long.
